O’Hare area legislators announced bi-partisan efforts to bring noise relief to the communities around the airport, at a press conference yesterday (Tuesday) in Chicago.

State Rep. Christine Winger (R-45th) of Wood Dale, whose constituents are in the suburbs immediately west of the airport, was joined at the James Thompson Center by State Rep. Michael McAuliffe (R-20th), State Sen. John Mulroe (D-10th), both of Chicago’s Northwest Side, and State Sen. Laura Murphy (D-28) of Des Plaines.

“We are committed to working together to find solutions,” said Winger. “Our constituents deserve no less.”

She is responsible for introducing four of the five legislative efforts.

The shift of air traffic around the airport to a primarily east-west series of runways, through the O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP), has placed increasing noise burdens on communities in their districts. Not all of the areas impacted have been promised any airport-funded soundproofing.

“Every day I hear from my constituents about the difficulty of living near O’Hare because of recent moves being made beyond their control,” McAuliffe said. “We’re calling on our friends in the legislature to help us fight on their behalf.”

Chicago, IL…On Tuesday, a group of legislators from Chicago and the suburbs announced their bipartisan effort to help bring relief to the more than one million residents impacted by adverse noise from O’Hare International Airport. 

According to Rep. Christine Winger (R-Wood Dale) many constituents have suffered the endless noise from O’Hare for many years.  Others are experiencing the excruciating ill effects of aircraft noise for the very first time with the addition of the newest runway that opened last October. Still more can expect to join the ranks of those enduring aircraft noise when future runways become operational.

Illinois lawmakers on Tuesday will outline legislation aimed at offering relief to residents east and west of O’Hare International Airport hard hit by new flight paths.

The package of at least four bills or resolutions includes an attempt to give residents living 20 miles east or west of the airport’s busiest runways tax credits for insulating their homes against the barrage of new jet noise.

Springfield, IL…. State Representative Michael McAuliffe (R-Chicago) has filed House Resolution 977 to designate the week of February 21 to February 27 as "Eating Disorder Awareness Week" in the State of Illinois. Rep McAuliffe is asking that the State join other organizations, states, and schools in recognizing the nationally designated week.

“Like many other mental illnesses and disorders, eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia live in the shadows because of attached stigmas and misinformation,” Rep McAuliffe said. “The goal with this resolution and awareness week is to put the spotlight in Illinois on the seriousness of eating disorders and to improve public understanding of their causes, triggers, and treatments.”

During this upcoming week, members of the community are encouraged to wear purple and learn more about these illnesses. The National Eating Disorders Association will be holding its annual conference in Chicago this year from September 29th to October 1st.  For more information go to http://www.nedawareness.org/.

O'Hare Noise
        The O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) Fly Quiet Committee met for the fourth time on Monday. As a founding member of the bipartisan and bicameral O'Hare Noise Impact Legislative Caucus, I took a moment to address the commission. I spoke about legislation being proposed this spring and the strategies to reduce noise being utilized by Heathrow Airport outside of London. I talked about Senate Bill 636, a bill I spearheaded through the House and became law, which encourages Chicago and O'Hare to modernize their noise monitoring technology.
