The fair offered a variety of services for senior citizens in the fifth district community including free state identification cards for those 65 and older, free 911 cell phones for those over 60 or with a disability, and  free medical identification cards. The event was co-hosted by State Senator John Mulroe.

October is breast cancer awareness month. 1 in 8 women will have breast cancer in their lives. Senate Bill 54, championed in the House by State Representative McAuliffe, now known as Public Act 99-0407 will help Illinois women have improved access to life-saving 3-D mammography. The act expands healthcare coverage for breast cancer screenings by adding the use of “breasttomosynthesis,” or 3-D breast screening technology, to the procedures that must be covered by health insurance plans. The improved technology provides for cross-section 3-D images of breast tissue that can more accurately detect early stage breast cancer. This law took effect in August when the governor signed the bill. Early detection is the key to the best prognosis for those diagnosed with breast cancer, don't forget to get your yearly mammogram.
